Hermit Lake: A Four-Season Guide to New Hampshire's Hidden Gem
When most people think of New Hampshire's Lakes Region, they picture Lake Winnipesaukee—the sprawling 69-square-mile body of water that dominates the area. But just to the south lies Hermit Lake, a quieter, more intimate lake that offers everything its famous neighbor does, without the crowds.
We've been hosting guests at our lakefront property on Hermit Lake for years, and we've learned exactly when to visit, what to do, and where to go. This guide shares everything we know.
Why Hermit Lake?
Hermit Lake covers about 4,264 acres and reaches depths of up to 95 feet. It's connected to Lake Winnipesaukee via the Winnipesaukee River, but maintains its own distinct character. The lake is surrounded by the towns of Sanbornton, Tilton, Belmont, Laconia, and Meredith—each offering its own charm.
What makes Hermit Lake special is its balance. It's large enough for serious boating and fishing, but small enough that you can kayak across it in an afternoon. The shoreline is mostly residential, giving it a peaceful, community feel that the more commercial Winnipesaukee lacks.
Summer: The Lake at Its Best
Best Time: Late June through August Water Temperature: 70-75°F at peak summer
Summer is when Hermit Lake truly shines. The water warms up enough for comfortable swimming, and the long days mean you can be on the lake from sunrise to sunset.
What to Do
Swimming & Sunbathing Our property has a private dock and beach area, but there are also public access points around the lake. The water is clean and clear—you can see the bottom in many areas.
Boating & Water Sports The lake is perfect for pontoon boats, kayaks, paddleboards, and fishing boats. Jet skis are allowed but less common than on Winnipesaukee, which keeps the atmosphere calmer. Several marinas offer rentals if you don't have your own watercraft.
Fishing Hermit Lake is known for excellent fishing. You'll find:
- Largemouth and smallmouth bass
- Rainbow and brown trout
- Landlocked salmon
- Perch and pickerel
Early morning and evening are the best times. The coves and weed beds along the shoreline are particularly productive.

Fall: Peak Foliage Season
Best Time: Late September through mid-October Peak Foliage: Usually first or second week of October
Fall in the Lakes Region is absolutely spectacular. The hills surrounding Hermit Lake explode with color—reds, oranges, yellows, and golds reflecting off the water. This is arguably the most beautiful time to visit.
What to Do
Scenic Drives The roads around the lake offer stunning foliage views. Take Route 3 north toward the White Mountains for even more dramatic scenery. The Kancamagus Highway (about an hour north) is one of the most famous foliage drives in New England.

Winter: Snowy Adventures
Best Time: December through March Average Snowfall: 60-80 inches per season
Winter transforms the Lakes Region into a snowy wonderland. While the lake freezes over (usually by late January), the surrounding area offers plenty of cold-weather activities.

- Gunstock Mountain Resort (15 minutes): Family-friendly with night skiing
- Ragged Mountain (45 minutes): Less crowded, great for intermediates
- Loon Mountain (1 hour): Larger resort with more terrain
Snowmobiling The region has extensive snowmobile trail systems. Northern Extremes Snowmobiling offers guided tours on the 50-mile Bear Notch trail system with views of Mt. Washington.
Ice Fishing Once the ice is thick enough (usually 4+ inches), ice fishing is popular on Hermit Lake. You'll need a New Hampshire fishing license. Local bait shops can point you to the best spots.
Cozy Indoor Activities
- Canterbury Shaker Village: Historic site with beautiful architecture and unique gifts
- Mills Falls Marketplace in Meredith: Shopping, dining, and a 40-foot indoor waterfall

Insider Tip
The lake house is incredibly cozy in winter. There's nothing quite like watching the snow fall over the frozen lake from a warm living room with a fire going.
Spring: Renewal Season
Best Time: May through early June What to Expect: Mud season in April, beautiful weather by May
Spring is the quietest season in the Lakes Region. April can be muddy as the snow melts, but by May, everything is green and blooming. This is a great time for those seeking solitude and lower prices.
What to Do
Hiking & Biking The trails dry out by mid-May, and the weather is perfect for outdoor activities without the summer heat. The Northern Rail Trail offers miles of flat, scenic biking and walking.
