Your Guide to Glendon Road Beach
[Image blocked: Glendon Road Beach in Dennis Port]
If you've ever searched for Cape Cod beaches, you've probably seen the same names over and over: Mayflower Beach, West Dennis Beach, Coast Guard Beach. Those are all great, but they're not the only options. Glendon Road Beach in Dennis Port is one of those places that doesn't make the "best of" lists but probably should.
We've been going to Glendon Road Beach for years, and it's become our go-to spot when we want a relaxed beach day without the crowds. Here's everything you need to know.
What Makes Glendon Road Beach Special
Glendon Road Beach sits on the south side of Dennis, facing Nantucket Sound. This matters because the Sound is significantly warmer than the Atlantic Ocean on the outer Cape or even Cape Cod Bay on the north side. On a hot August day, the water temperature can reach the low 70s—warm enough that you'll actually want to swim, not just wade in up to your knees.
The beach itself is a long stretch of sand with plenty of room to spread out. Unlike some of the more famous beaches, you won't be setting up your umbrella three feet from your neighbor. Even on busy summer weekends, it feels spacious.
What really sets Glendon Road apart is the easy access. Many Cape Cod beaches require navigating steep wooden staircases to reach the sand. At Glendon Road, you walk straight from the parking lot onto the beach. If you're traveling with young children, carrying a lot of gear, or have mobility concerns, this makes a real difference.
The Practical Details
Parking
[Image blocked: Glendon Road Beach with lifeguard stand]
The parking lot has 66 spaces, which fills up on peak summer days but rarely as quickly as the more famous beaches. Here's what parking costs:
- Daily: $35 (cash only)
- Weekly: $100
- Season Pass (Resident): $60
- Season Pass (Long-term Renter): $190
- Season Pass (Non-resident): $370
Parking fees apply from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. If you're staying in Dennis for a week or more, the weekly pass is a good deal—it works at all Dennis beaches.
Pro tip: Arrive before 10 AM on summer weekends to guarantee a spot. By noon, the lot is usually full.
Amenities
- Lifeguards: On duty 9 AM to 4 PM during summer season
- Restrooms: Yes, clean and well-maintained
- Food: The Ocean House restaurant is directly across the street
- Showers: No outdoor showers at this beach
Dogs
Dogs are allowed on the beach from Labor Day through Memorial Day (the off-season). During summer, no dogs are permitted. If you're visiting with a dog in the off-season, this is actually one of the better beaches for a walk—the long stretch of sand gives them plenty of room to run.
The Water
Nantucket Sound is the warmest water you'll find on Cape Cod. The Sound is relatively shallow and protected, which allows the water to warm up significantly during summer months.
The waves at Glendon Road are typically gentle—this isn't a surfing beach. For families with young children, that's a plus. The gradual slope means kids can wade out quite a ways before the water gets deep, and there's no strong undertow to worry about.
The bottom is mostly sand with some small rocks in places. Water shoes aren't necessary but can be helpful if you're sensitive to walking on shells.
What's Nearby
The Ocean House Restaurant
Directly across the street from the beach, The Ocean House is one of the best restaurants in Dennis Port. It was named one of OpenTable's Top 100 Most Scenic Restaurants in 2023, and the recognition is deserved. The views of Nantucket Sound are spectacular, especially at sunset.
The menu focuses on seafood, as you'd expect, with excellent lobster rolls, fresh fish, and a raw bar. It's on the pricier side for Cape Cod, but the quality and setting justify it. Reservations are strongly recommended in summer.
The Sailing Cow
For a more casual option, The Sailing Cow is a beachfront restaurant just down the road. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner with outdoor seating overlooking the Sound. It's a great spot for a post-beach meal when you're still in flip-flops and don't want to dress up.
Swan River Seafood
About a five-minute drive away, Swan River Seafood overlooks the Swan River and serves classic Cape Cod seafood. The fried clams are excellent, and the waterfront setting is lovely.
Other Dennis Port Beaches
If Glendon Road is full or you want to explore, several other beaches are within a short drive:
Sea Street Beach
Just down the road, Sea Street Beach is similar to Glendon Road—warm Sound water, lifeguards, and a relaxed atmosphere. It tends to be slightly more crowded but has similar amenities.
Raycroft Beach
A smaller beach with lifeguards, Raycroft is another good option for families. The parking lot is smaller, so arrive early.
West Dennis Beach
If you want a bigger beach experience, West Dennis Beach is about a 10-minute drive. This mile-long beach has more facilities, including food vendors and volleyball courts. It's also a great spot for sunset watching.
Best Times to Visit
Peak Season (July-August)
This is when the water is warmest and all the amenities are available. Expect crowds, especially on weekends. Arrive early for parking.
Shoulder Season (June, September)
September is arguably the best time to visit. The water is still warm from summer, but the crowds have thinned considerably. Many locals consider this the ideal beach month. June can be hit or miss—some years the water warms up quickly, other years it takes until late June to be comfortable for swimming.
Off-Season (October-May)
The beach is open year-round, though there are no lifeguards or facilities outside summer. Off-season beach walks can be beautiful, especially on crisp fall days. Bring a jacket—the wind off the Sound can be chilly.
Tips for Your Visit
-
Bring cash for parking. The daily fee is cash only.
-
Pack a cooler. While The Ocean House is great for a nice meal, it's not cheap. Bringing your own lunch and snacks gives you more flexibility.
-
Arrive early on weekends. The parking lot fills up, and there's no overflow parking nearby.
-
Stay for sunset. The south-facing beach doesn't have the dramatic sunsets of the bay side, but the evening light on the water is still beautiful.
-
Bring a beach umbrella. There's no natural shade on the beach.
-
Check the tide. At low tide, the beach is wider and there's more room to spread out. At high tide, the swimming area is still good but the beach is narrower.
Why We Keep Coming Back
There are flashier beaches on Cape Cod. There are beaches with bigger waves, more dramatic scenery, or more amenities. But Glendon Road Beach has something that's increasingly hard to find: it's just a nice, uncomplicated place to spend a day.
The water is warm. The sand is soft. The crowds are manageable. You can walk right onto the beach without climbing stairs. And when you get hungry, one of the Cape's best restaurants is across the street.
That's really all we need from a beach day.
