Where to Eat in Dennis Port

Dennis Port has more good restaurants than most people realize. It's not as well-known as Provincetown or Chatham for dining, but that's part of its appeal—you can actually get a table, and the prices are more reasonable.

We've eaten at most of the restaurants in the area over the years. Here are our honest recommendations.

Fine Dining

The Ocean House Restaurant

425 Old Wharf Road, Dennis Port

This is the flagship restaurant in Dennis Port, and it deserves the reputation. The Ocean House sits directly across from Glendon Road Beach, with panoramic views of Nantucket Sound. OpenTable named it one of the Top 100 Most Scenic Restaurants in America in 2023.

The menu focuses on seafood, prepared with more sophistication than your typical Cape Cod fish house. The lobster is excellent, the raw bar is fresh, and the wine list is thoughtful. Prices are on the higher end for the Cape, but the quality and setting justify it.

Our picks: The lobster roll (Connecticut-style, with warm butter), the day boat scallops, and whatever fish is freshest that day.

Tips: Make reservations, especially for dinner. Request a window table for the best views. The sunset is spectacular.

Pelham House Resort

14 Sea Street, Dennis Port

The rooftop restaurant at Pelham House offers another upscale option with ocean views. The menu emphasizes local, seasonal ingredients with creative preparations. It's a good choice for a special occasion or when you want something beyond typical beach fare.

Our picks: The tuna tartare, the local catch, and the craft cocktails.

Casual Seafood

Swan River Seafood

5 Lower County Road, Dennis Port

Overlooking the Swan River, this is classic Cape Cod seafood in a waterfront setting. The menu covers all the basics—fried clams, lobster rolls, fish and chips—done well and served with views of the boats coming and going.

Our picks: The fried whole belly clams, the lobster roll, and the fish tacos.

Tips: Go for lunch to avoid the dinner crowds. The outdoor seating is lovely on a nice day.

The Original Seafood Restaurant

1269 Route 28, South Dennis

This is a no-frills seafood shack that's been serving the area for decades. It's fast-casual style—order at the counter, grab a number, find a seat. The fried seafood is excellent, and the prices are reasonable.

Our picks: The fried clam plate, the fish sandwich, and the onion rings.

Chapin's Fish & Chips

85 Taunton Avenue, Dennis Port

Another local favorite for fried seafood. Chapin's keeps it simple: fresh fish, good batter, reasonable prices. It's the kind of place where locals eat, which is always a good sign.

Beachfront Dining

The Sailing Cow

369 Lower County Road, Dennis Port

This beachfront restaurant overlooks Nantucket Sound and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The setting is the main attraction—you're right on the water, with sand between your toes if you want it.

The food is solid American fare: burgers, sandwiches, seafood, salads. Nothing fancy, but well-executed and perfect for a casual meal after the beach.

Our picks: The fish tacos, the lobster BLT, and the frozen drinks.

Tips: Come for breakfast or lunch when it's less crowded. The outdoor seating fills up fast on nice days.

Breakfast & Brunch

Grumpy's

1408 Route 28, South Dennis

Grumpy's is a local institution for breakfast. The portions are huge, the coffee is strong, and the prices are fair. Expect a wait on summer weekends—it's that popular.

Our picks: The corned beef hash, the blueberry pancakes, and the eggs Benedict.

Harbor Fox Café

4 Depot Street, Dennis Port

A cozy spot for coffee and light breakfast. The coffee is excellent, and they have good pastries and breakfast sandwiches. It's a nice alternative when you don't want a full diner breakfast.

Casual Dining

The Den Cape Cod

17 Center Street, Dennis

A family-friendly bar and restaurant with a fun atmosphere. They're known for their hand-rolled pizzas and burgers. It's a good option when you want something casual but better than fast food.

Our picks: The signature pizzas, the burgers, and the local beers on tap.

Clancy's

8 Upper County Road, Dennis Port

A long-standing local spot with a varied menu covering seafood, steaks, pasta, and pub fare. It's reliable rather than remarkable—the kind of place where you know what you're getting.

Red Nun Bar & Grill

746 Main Street, Dennis Port

Good burgers and a solid beer selection in a casual setting. It's a local hangout that doesn't try to be anything it's not.

Quick Bites

Banderas

Route 28, Dennis Port

When you need beach sandwiches, Banderas delivers. They make good subs and wraps that travel well to the beach. Order ahead during busy times.

The Dog House

189 Lower County Road, Dennis Port

An inventive hot dog stand that's become a local favorite. They serve creative hot dog variations along with other quick bites. It's fun, affordable, and perfect for a casual lunch.

Ice Cream

Sundae School

387 Lower County Road, Dennis Port

The Cape Cod institution for ice cream. Sundae School has been serving homemade ice cream since 1976, and the quality shows. The flavors are creative, the portions are generous, and the experience is quintessentially Cape Cod.

Our picks: The Cape Cod Chocolate, the Frozen Pudding, and whatever seasonal flavor catches your eye.

A Few Tips

  1. Make reservations for dinner at the nicer restaurants, especially on weekends and during peak season.

  2. Lunch is often easier than dinner—shorter waits, lower prices, same food.

  3. Check hours carefully. Some restaurants close or reduce hours in the off-season.

  4. Ask about the catch of the day. The best seafood restaurants get fresh deliveries and will tell you what's best.

  5. Don't skip breakfast. Cape Cod does breakfast well, and it's often the best value meal of the day.
